Scrunchie with Visible Seams Tutorial

Scrunchies are a great way to finish off a dance costume or gymnastics outfit. Below is a tutorial on the simplest, most basic scrunchie to make, but I have a few more scrunchie tutorials on the way if you’re looking for something even more exciting.

These scrunchies have a gymnast’s seal of approval. At least a dozen disappeared into my daughter’s bedroom (because, apparently, you can never have too many scunchies, and she wears them practically every day, even when she’s not at training). So I guess I better get the tutorials completed before there are no scrunchies left to blog about.

The tutorial below requires the use of an overlocker or serger, but if you don’t have an overlocker, I do have instructions for a scrunchie that can be made using just a sewing machine and a scrunchie that requires no sewing at all.

To begin:

  • Cut a piece of fabric 7.5cm x 75cm (3 inches x 30 inches).
  • Cut a piece of elastic 20cm (8 inches) long or you can use a large hair tie for technique 2 and 3. The elastic should be 6mm (¼ inch) wide or less.

Technique 1

Fold lycra in half, along the dotted red line, with right sides together.

Sew ends together.

Fold lycra in half, along the dotted red line, with wrong sides together and pin along the raw edge.

Sew raw edges together using an overlocker or serger, leave a 3-5cm (1-2 inch) gap in the stitching to insert the elastic.

Using a safety pin as a guide insert elastic into your lycra. The fabric will gather as you pull the elastic through it. Make sure you don't let the other end of the elastic disappear inside the scrunchie, adding a safety pin to the other end of the elastic can help prevent this.

Tie the ends of the elastic together.

Push the elastic into the opening in your scrunchie.

Sew the opening in the lycra closed. Tuck in the ends of your serger or overlocker thread.

Scrunchie is now complete.

Technique 2

Fold lycra in half, along the dotted red line, with right sides together.

Sew the ends together along the dotted blue line.

Tie the ends of the elastic together to form a loop or use a hair tie.

Pin the lycra around the elastic. It will gather as you pin it (you can skip this step if you are feeling confident and have some experience sewing lycra).

Sew around the raw edges of your fabric together using an overlocker or serger.

Tuck in the end of your serger or overlocker thread. Scrunchie is now complete.

Technique 3

If you are a confident sewer and you’ve done all this before you can use technique 2 but leave out the part where you pin the lycra before sewing and just pull the raw edges together as you sew. This makes making scrunchies super quick!
